The Malta Gaming Authority released its interim report for 2023, stating that the local gaming sector generated €810.7 million in gross value added during the first half of the year. This figure represents a 9.5 percent contribution to the national economy, with the industry accounting for 12.2 percent of overall economic activity.
Compared to the same period in 2022, value added increased by 1.1 percent. As of June 2023, the regulator maintained licenses for 335 companies, holding a combined total of 345 gaming permits. Operators paid €41.2 million in regulatory fees and taxes during the first six months of the year.
Market Outlook and Economic Position
The sector continues to operate amid stricter regulatory requirements, tax uncertainty for major providers, and global growth projections affected by geopolitical developments. Despite these factors, the industry maintains a stable position within the Maltese economy. Medium-term expansion remains projected, though at a slower pace than previous periods. A recent industry analysis ranks gaming among the three most prominent business segments in Malta for the upcoming five years, placing it alongside tourism and leisure.
