Jim Townsend has been appointed as the new chair of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, assuming the role on August 1, 2026. He replaces Jim Ananich, who is stepping down at the end of July.
Townsend will serve a term representing Democrats on the board through December 31, 2028. His specific designation as chair will continue at the pleasure of the governor. Before joining the board leadership, Townsend worked as the director of the Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy at Wayne State University.
Legal and Legislative Experience
Townsend previously practiced law at the Detroit office of Butzel Long, specializing in corporate and real estate matters. He also served as a representative for the 26th district in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2011 to 2017.
Henry Williams, executive director of the MGCB, noted that Townsend's background in law and economic development supports his capability to lead the board. Williams also acknowledged the service of outgoing chair Jim Ananich.
